Helen Nesburg has always loved drawing monsters. At the age of seven, she wrote and illustrated her first children’s book—a touching tale of a young monster's journey to find his fortune. While other kids drew horses and cars, she was a monster girl.
Now, she’s a muralist and illustrator based in the wonderfully weird city of Portland, OR, where she lives with her husband and two small wild humans. With over 20 years in fine arts and a career that spans from international non profits to big tech, she’s grateful for the winding path that led to owning her own creative business, where she continues to bring her whimsical and slightly spooky visions to life.
As a first-generation American and neurodivergent artist, she draws inspiration from her travels, having lived in Thailand, India, and Central America. She sees monsters as metaphors for those misunderstood or on the margins—a way to reconnect to humanity through color, humor, and vibrant storytelling. Her illustrations celebrate the odd and the endearing, inviting viewers into worlds where misfit monsters find a place to belong.
